Mosaic

This mosaic was designed by Professor Alden Krider and his mosaic class of 1960 at the request of Dr. Ralph Nevins, who was the head of Mechanical Engineering. The mosaic represents elements of Mechanical Engineering, including energy, power cycles, mechanisms, and the equations used to describe these phenomena. The inclusion of Einstein's E=mc^2 is especially appropriate after the merger of the Mechanical and Nuclear Departments.

The mosaic was originally displayed above the entrance to Mechanical Engineering in Seaton Hall, but was taken down when Mechanical Engineering moved to Durland Hall (now named Rathbone Hall). In 1990 the mosaic was recovered from the basement of Seaton Hall with about half the tiles either loose or missing. Buckets of replacement tiles were found in the exact location in the workshop where they had been left by Professor Krider when he retired. A two year project by the student members of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) restored the mosaic to its original beauty.

Professor Krider attended the occasion of the mosaic's reinstallation in the Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Department, Rathbone Hall, Kansas State University.
